Sally, a dealer who rents booths in several multi-dealer antique shops, advised that it is important in this business climate for antiques dealers to be malleable and innovative in their business strategies. She said, "I have heard all the doom and gloom stories about the antiques business. There is no doubt that the antiques business has changed a lot. However, I don't know what in life doesn't change from time to time. I think of it the same way I used to think about the old tree story. If the tree cannot bend, it breaks. To apply that to the antiques business, I myself have become more flexible.

"That means, rather than lament the advent of e-Bay and the on_line auctions, I got into it. Rather than anguish over the fact that my prized Majolica pieces cannot be readily found anymore, and when it is found the prices are higher and the books are quoting higher prices, so that collectors have dropped off and began collecting something else, I just don't devote as much space in my booth to Majolica, or for that matter Flow Blue, as in earlier days.

"When times are tough, people don't lose their desire to collect, but they may not be able to buy a 19th-century jardiniere for $3,500, or at least not very often, and collectors like to get their fix, no matter what! I try to stick to book prices or even a little less if I got it at a good enough price to do that and still make some money.

Tim, Jr. advised, "I know that personalized customer service is vital to running a successful antiques business. The customers will come back again and again if they are treated well and feel confident that they are working with an intelligent and honest dealer. The internet fills a niche for those collectors looking for a specific item but our customers prefer hands-on shopping."

Dorcas remarked, "With a name like mine, I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get into sewing at an early age. I love to sew! I also collect and sell late 1800's to early 1900's sewing-related tools, sewing machines, fabrics and threads. No one dealer can know everything about the vast variety of antiques. It certainly does not hurt to specialize in an area that you love! I have a strong following of repeat customers and enjoy being a resource for collectors around the country. My formula for success is that I found a need and I fill it – with a smile!"

Creativity and adaptability are apparently the keys to success for antiques dealers in today’s economy. You are holding the best guide for your antiquing jaunts in your hands.
